Mission / History

The Historic Lewes Cat Society is an I.R.S. registered non-profit 501(c)(3) Delaware Corporation and is dependent upon public generosity for its work with feral and abandoned cats.

The Society endorses a no-kill philosophy and we euthanize only upon the advice of our veterinarians as an absolute last resort because of health problems.

Donations made to the Society are Tax Deductible. Funds are spent primarily on veterinary expenses, medical supplies, equipment and food. The Society maintains no paid staff. ALL work is voluntary. Other than the satisfaction received from helping these loving creatures, the only benefits available to Society members is advanced notice of all our low cost clinics and other events.

Our adult cats are examined by our vet, spayed/neutered and receive rabies and distemper shots as well as being tested for FIV/Leukemia. Our kittens are also vetted and receive their defleaing, deworming and distemper shots . They will need a FIV/Leuk test when they are spayed/neutered if we do not have the mom to test. They will need their rabies shot when they are 16 weeks old.. Only healthy socialized cats and kittens are placed up for adoption.

A donation of $75 is required when a kitten is adopted, and a spay/neuter coupon is given with the adoption for the surgery at The Kitty Clinic operated by the Historic Lewes Cat Society. The cat/kitten will be tested for FIV/Leuk at time of surgery if the health record of the cat shows that this test has not been performed previously on it or its mother.. A donation of $100 is required when a cat is adopted that has been sterilized, received all its shots and the FIV/Leuk test. These donations are necessary to defray some of the vetting costs.

To volunteer as a worker, foster parent, or to provide other services, materials or donations, please contact one or our representatives at the above listed telephone number or through our mailing address.

If you are interested in adopting, please take an application and call to inquire about the current selection of cats and kittens available.

Thank you
Vivian Barry, Chairman.
